As Ragdale Hall Health Hydro in Leicestershire is arguably one of the better known spas in the UK, I was expecting good things. I took a friend who had been having a bit of a tough time and needed a little pampering. She had an ankle injury which has been causing her a lot of pain and was really looking forward to the 50 minute massage which was part of the Ragdale Overnight Reviver Break we were both booked in for.

A tour of the spa
Ragdale is so huge that the staff actually put on a tour for new arrivals, and we took the tour so that we didn’t miss anything. Our guide was friendly, told us everything we needed to know, and really reinforced the fact that it’s a friendly, family-feel spa where the emphasis is squarely on relaxation and chilling out. Nothing feels rushed at Ragdale Hall, the pace is leisurely and everyone is friendly and happy to help. We didn’t come across anyone at all that could be described as less-than-helpful in the time we were there. Except Raggles, the cat, who rules the roost and sits wherever he damn well wants!

Thermal Spa
We both had our eye on the Thermal Spa, and managed to spend about an hour in there. It’s a fantastic addition to the spa, and not-to-be-missed. We tried the mood-lit candle pool where everyone has to remain silent (of course, that’s where I got the giggles), the outdoor waterfall, and the Volcanic Salt Bath, tickled our feet on the feet massage baths, inhaled the calming scents in the Scented Room, and finished off in the Colour Flow Cave. We would have stayed longer if we hadn’t been booked in for treatments…

I had a lovely Elemis facial. Holly, my therapist, was attentive, asking me about the massage pressure, which products I preferred and my general skin condition, as well as making sure I was warm enough and fetching pillows for under my knees, always a very welcome thought if you suffer from lower back pain.

Dinner and Cakes
The food was delicious, as was the wine!  We’d already spotted the amazing selection of cakes and pastries in the Veranda Bar when we were on our tour, and hankered after an Earl Grey cupcake – but by the time we got there in early evening, the delicious cakes had all gone. Boo. So my tip, if you’re a lover of all things cakey, is to get over there early.
