Make your Carpet a Design Object

When you’re picking out a new carpet, the temptation is always to go for the least obtrusive, nude, go-with-everything shades. But if you want to be ahead of the interior design crowd, head for the colours and patterns.

It’s fine to play with carpet design these days and you don’t have to stick with a dull neutral if you feel like having a bit of fun with your flooring. Carpets come in a whole range of bold colours, and quirky designs, no longer just an afterthought!

Carpets are increasingly influenced by contemporary fashions and tastes, and are turning into  individual, unique style statements – 2012 is already shaping up to be a season of brave, bold colour – pink, mustard yellow, cobalt blue, leaf green, turquoise, petrol and rust – separately or as block colours, but also in funky, colourful combinations. In short, modern carpets are an attractive and eye-catching design statement.

Add a bit of a floral or even a patchwork design to break up the block colour. With florals and Orientals, don’t stick to tried and tested designs, go one step further and brighten up a dull room with new colour combinations, patterns or partially printed pile to create a frayed effect.

You can get the patchwork effect by using various smaller carpets or carpet tiles or even by combining individual carpets in bright colours – the look can be dramatic, stylish and fun.

If you want to really take the plunge, choose a fabulously funky carpet that features bold stripes or blocks. Gingham, candy stripes and checks are back in fashion, with  subdued tartan-style checks, sophisticated marble-effect designs, historical tile designs, classical ornamental and floral motifs all out there if you know where to look – and also where to put them. It takes a certain amount of daring to adorn your home with a statement carpet – but it’ll look so great you’ll wonder what took you so long.

Of course, if you really don’t think you’re brave enough to completely carpet a living space with something you might get fed up with very quickly…you can always test the reaction to your flooring theme with a well-placed rug!

For advice on carpets and all types of flooring the friendly team at Essex Country Flooring are always on hand to help.
